The cost of recycling has increased approximately 58% since 2020, putting a strain on the city budget. The City Council considered all options during budget planning for fiscal year 2022 (summer 2021) and made the decision to move to a biweekly schedule in order to continue to provide this service, which is important to our residents, in the most cost-effective manner.
The change to a biweekly schedule has been timed to coincide with the start of a new calendar year.
Latham Home Sanitation will provide a second recycling bin to any City of Lawrenceville customer upon request at no extra charge, allowing any residential customer to have a maximum of TWO recycling bins at no charge. The request should be made by the customer to Latham Home Sanitation at 770.554.0455.
Customers with heavier recycling needs may purchase a new 65-gallon bin made specifically for recycling (recycling logo printed on the can) from a retail home improvement store. An old trash cart repurposed is not appropriate, as it could be missed by the Latham Home Sanitation drivers during biweekly pick up due to no clear indication as a recycling container.
All customers recycle at different levels. Research has shown that those who are not heavy recyclers may utilize the larger recycling container as an extra trash can. The end result is contaminated recycling, which defeats the purpose of recycling.
